Manifesto for the Oceans of Colombia

Protection, Governance, Security and Sustainability

We are currently in a critical situation regarding the future of our oceans, bothin Colombia and globally. At CEMarin, we recognize that the world needs an economic transformation promoting sustainable well-being and that this requires the articulation of diverse actors, including the state, academia, social institutions, communities and the business sector. This represents huge challenges but also huge opportunities.

In this context, CEMarin, our member universities and associated institutions, in alliance with the Ocean Commission of Colombia(CCO) and Conservation International(CI) and with the support of the Malpelo Foundation and the Agenda del Mar, have launched the Manifesto for the Oceans of Colombia, integrating the commitments of these institutions. Added to the actions of our environmental and business allies, the proposals of the Misión Internacional de Sabios focused on oceans and hydrobiological resources, aswell as the public policy documents led by the CCO, in particular the CONPES 3990 Colombia 2030: Sustainable Bioceanic Power, we collectively aim to strengthen our maritime capacity and its associated economic activities.

The purpose of this manifesto is to articulate efforts from them any diverse sectors involved in research and innovation, education, and management, control and surveillance actions in coastal marine territories. The final objective is to build clear and definitive strategies within the framework of governance, security and the sustainable management of Colombia’s oceans. At CEMarin, as leaders in the academic sector and marine sciences, we aspire to a renewed vision of education, to generate technologies and access to spaces of open innovation, and to establish and develop study plans and research lines that respond to these new priorities of the world.
