“Colombia will have to bet more on marine sciences”
This was asserted by Professor Andrés Fernando Osorio Arias, from the Faculty of Mines of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (UNAL) Medellín Headquarters, who from 2020 will be the new executive director of the Corporation Center of Excellence in Marine Sciences (CEMarin).
The election of the academic was made during the General Assembly of this corporation chaired by Professor Dolly Montoya Castaño, rector of the UNAL
The elected director of CEMarin said that “we have a center of excellence in which we are the best universities in the country in marine sciences; this means positioning this field from a quality perspective with a strategic ally that is the University of Giessen (Germany), which has allowed us to position ourselves in Europe ”.
The CEMarin will have in 2020 one of the main challenges worldwide for the proclamation of the 2021-2030 period as “Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development” by the UN.
“We have a challenge ahead of us and we cannot be below this commitment that the world poses through the Sustainable Development Goals and the global organizations that ask to protect our oceans and conserve them in a sustainable way,” said Dr. Osorio.
In addition to the election of the new Board of Directors, during the CEMarin Assembly several budgetary aspects were defined for next year and the permanence of the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University in the organization was confirmed.
In the event the rector of the University of Antioquia, John Jairo Arboleda Céspedes, indicated that “we are at a fundamental moment in the development of marine sciences for the country and for the world; This is not only part of the Marine and Coastal Sustainable Development Goals, but also of two historical issues for Colombia: the creation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, in which of course the oceans must be given a central importance ” .
“The second moment is the final report delivered by La Misión Internacional de Sabios -with the presence of the President of the Republic–, which draws the guidelines that experts are giving the country on how to move forward in these processes of science, technology and innovation; in one of the eight points of that report is the ocean issue, so the challenge is greater, ”concluded the director.
